North Carolina Swim Camp

Welcome 2017 Campers! 

First of all, thank you so much for your patience in waiting for us to post this letter. As you may have seen, the daily schedule was posted so that you may know the schedule for your campers. As far as the remaining camp details, we generally release these in a letter by the middle of May.

We are gearing up for a GREAT week of camp and are so very excited that you are choosing to spend this summer with us! Please feel free to email me with any questions or requests at dsherrard@unc.edu and I will get back to you.

Check In:

  • For Mini Camp 1 (Sat, April 22nd): Check in beings at 8:30 AM and continues until 9:45 AM at Koury Natatorium
  • For Mini Camps 2 & 3 (Sat, June 10th & Sat, June 17th):  Check In begins at 11:30 AM and continues until 12:45 PM at Koury Natatorium.
  • For Technical & Elite Sessions 1 & 2 (Sun, June 11th & Sun, June 18th):  Check in begins at Noon and continues until 2:30PM at Koury Natatorium

Once check in is complete at Koury, Overnight Campers may begin checking into Hinton James Dorm.

Again, please report to the pool first to receive your Gatorade bag, camp dorm key, lanyard, camp cap, water bottle and camp shirt.   If you have not turned in your medical form or your waiver, please bring them with you to the pool.

When you report to the pool, you may park in the flat lot across from the pool.

To enter the pool, walk from the flat lot in between the Dean E Smith Center and the building to the Smith Center’s Left.  You will see camp sign in signage and an entrance on your left that has the lettering Carolina Swimming and Diving above the door.  Proceed through that door and follow signage to the pool deck check in.

The Camp Store will be open and available for purchases from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM and can accept cash, credit or check.

Directions to park at the pool are below:

From Interstate 40:

  • Take Exit 273 (Hwy 54) towards Chapel Hill.
  • Continue straight for almost 4 miles.
  • Take the 15/501 South exit.
  • You will now be on 15/501.
  • Make a right on Manning Drive. (Also the same road as the UNC Hospital).
  • Roughly 1/8th of a mile on Manning, turn left onto Skipper Bowles Drive (it is the first available left, immediately after UNC Family Medical Practice Building on your left) and proceed until you see the Dean E. Smith Center in front of you. The flat surface lot will be the first right that you can turn into.

From Interstate 85 (coming from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro):

  • Take I-40 East towards Raleigh.
  • Take Exit 273 and turn right at the end of the exit ramp.
  • Continue straight for almost 4 miles.
  • Take the 15/501 South.
  • You will now be on 15/501.
  • Make a right on Manning Drive. (also the same rd the hospital is located).
  • Roughly 1/8th of a mile on Manning, turn left onto Skipper Bowles Drive (it is the first available left, immediately after UNC Family Medical Practice Building on your left) and proceed until you see the Dean E. Smith Center in front of you. The flat surface lot will be the first right that you can turn into.

From Interstate 85 North (from Durham and points north):

  • Follow I-85 to intersection with Hwy 15-501 South.
  • Follow 15-501 South towards Chapel Hill; the highway will divide.
  • Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street.
  • Make a right on Manning Drive. (also the same rd the hospital is located).
  • Roughly 1/8th of a mile on Manning, turn left onto Skipper Bowles Drive (it is the first available left, immediately after UNC Family Medical Practice Building on your left) and proceed until you see the Dean E. Smith Center in front of you. The flat surface lot will be the first right that you can turn into.

HOUSING:

  • Swim Camp Athletes will be staying in Hinton James Dorm.
  • Once athletes have checked in at the pool, please proceed across the street to the flat lot and proceed in your car along the marked route (swim camp signs) on the one way road that leads to Hinton James Dorm.  Traffic patterns will direct you Skipper Bowles Drive to move into the dorms.  You may park there temporarily while you move in.

PLEASE DO NOT LOSE YOUR KEY!
If you lose your dorm key, you will be charged $125.00 for a replacement and re-key fee.

ITEMS TO BRING TO CAMP:

  •     Pillow
  •     Pillow case
  •     Twin Bedsheets
  •     Fan
  •     Snacks for dorm
  •     Comforter
  •     Shower items
  •     Flip flops
  •     Sneakers
  •     Towels
  •     Fins, snorkels, kick board (label with your name)
  •     Two pairs of goggles
  •     Workout shorts / workout t-shirts
  •     At least two training swim suits
  •     Great Attitude Ready to Learn and Have Fun!

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE:
We have an Athletic Trainer on campus at all times during all training sessions and in the dorms at night. Samantha Cates is our Athletic Trainer for UNC Swimming and will be our Athletic Trainer and medical liaison during camp. If you have any medical concerns she will be onsite, and available to talk, during check in from noon until 2:30 PM. You may give her any medications and she will administer them as per your instruction.  If there are any medical emergencies during camp, Samantha will be contacting you directly via emergency numbers that you provide on the Medical Form. UNC Hospitals are 800 yards away and available for any emergencies.

CHECK OUT/ SCHEDULE FOR THURSDAY:

  • Parents are free to come observe camp on Thursday morning. We will begin a swimming drill demo at 10:00 AM that will end at 11:00 AM.
  • At 11:00 AM the swimming portion of camp ends, swimmers meet with their coaches once more and then are dismissed for 20 minutes of free play.
  • Camp videos will be available and explained how to be accessed by Rich DeSelm.
  • The Camp Store will be open and available for purchases from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM and can accept cash, credit card or check at this time.

UNACCOMPANIED TRAVEL:
If your athlete is flying or taking the train in from out of town, and needs airport transport, either from RDU or the train station, or from UNC to the airport or train station, please email Duncan Sherrard with “CAMPER TRAVEL ITINERARY” in the subject line. Please include all flight itineraries and specifically request transport either pick up before camp, drop off after camp or both. She will be sending out communication to families with travelers in the week prior to camp with the name, phone number and picture of the camp counselor who will be transporting your camper. If there is any miscommunication, your camper will be able to call their counselor or me at 919-869-5908. With regards to payment, if you have not paid for transport, Duncan will email you a special link to pay for transport. 

CAMP STORE / CAMP BANK:
If you would like to leave money with your athlete for souvenirs or extra spending money (we recommend $20 in case they want ice cream or a souvenir from Franklin Street). We will have someone be the camp bank and can hold the money for your athlete until they need it. Please give her money on Sunday during check in. There will be a camp bank station.

COMMUTER CHECK IN / CHECK OUT PROCEDURE:

  • Commuters will follow the same Sunday Schedule as indicated on the schedule on the website. However they will not be receiving a room key.
  • Commuters will sign in every day at 8:30 AM on deck every day and sign out every day at 5:00 PM at the pool with a counselor to be determined.
